Meet Artist Gabriella Kohr

Where are you from?

I'm originally from the East Coast, a small beach town called Bethany Beach, in Delaware. For the past 6 years I have lived in California and I currently reside in Dana Point, CA.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

I knew from a very young age when my older sister and I were always making and creating worlds of our own. Painting, collaging and just using our creativity to our utmost ability.

How would you describe your art?

I always find this question interesting. I never want my art to feel as though it fits into a box or designated genre. I feel as though my artwork is a reflection of myself and my effervescent being. Lately I have been drawn more towards seascapes and landscapes, pastel colors, and drawing or painting what I see daily.

What influences your art?

My environment, the places, people and things that surround me daily and my personal life experiences.

What is your artistic process like?

I would say that my process varies depending on each medium I'm working with, but I can give you an idea of my general artistic process. Initially, it all starts with gathering inspiration from all that is around me. I have little sketchbooks that I keep with me always. Constantly scribbling ideas down, or jotting down quick composition sketches, colors I like, pretty much anything that sparks interest. When I find that a sketch of an idea is ready to move onto the next phase I begin painting/drawing it larger, then from there I take time to admire and analyze this idea, and see how I should pursue it or what colors it needs etc.

What inspired “Thalo Sun”?

Thalo Sun was inspired by surfing, and the perspective you get to see when you're out on the water and turn around and look at the Coast line. It's one of my most favorite places to be. With this mural, I abstracted the subject matter and played with color to get a more lively and fun feeling overall. I named this piece Thalo Sun, because the day I started painting was the day my dear friend and artist Taylor Jade, gave birth to her first son Thalo.
